Eid-ul-Adha Passed… But One Question Remained
Eid-ul-Adha has been over for a few days now.
The freezer is still full.
New kitchen experiments are happening every day.
And social media is still full of those friends who consider uploading every plate of BBQ a sacred duty. 😄
But once the smoke cleared and the festive buzz faded…
a question stayed with me:
Why did Allah create Eid-ul-Adha in the first place?
Is it just a day of sacrifice?
Or is it a deep spiritual transformation hidden inside a ritual?
The Meaning Behind Eid-ul-Adha
The word Adha comes from the Arabic root that signifies sacrifice offering something precious for the sake of Allah.
And that meaning takes us back to one of the greatest stories ever told:
A story of love, obedience, and unshakeable trust.
The story of Ibrahim (A.S.), Ismail (A.S.), and Hajra (A.S.).
When Ibrahim (A.S.) saw in a dream that he was sacrificing his beloved son for Allah’s sake, it wasn’t just a father’s test.
It was the moment where love and obedience met face to face.
And when Ibrahim (A.S.) placed his most precious gift on Allah’s command…
Allah replaced Ismail (A.S.) with a ram and elevated their legacy forever.
But here’s the deeper question:
If Allah never intended for Ismail (A.S.) to be harmed, why was this test even necessary?
The Qur’an answers it beautifully:
Allah did not want the meat.
Allah did not want the blood.
Allah wanted to see the state of the heart.
“Neither their meat nor their blood reaches Allah.
What reaches Him is your taqwa.” (22:37)
And that’s when Eid-ul-Adha transforms from a ritual into a story of the soul.
The Eid-ul-Adha Within Us
We often think sacrifice is about an animal.
But every human being has their own “Ismail” inside them.
For some, it’s ego.
For some, anger.
For some, past trauma.
For others, a sin they want to leave but can’t.
A toxic habit.
A destructive attachment.
A fear that keeps blocking their path.
And sometimes Allah asks:
“If I ask you to let this go… will you trust Me?”
This is the true question of Eid-ul-Adha.
The Caterpillar Theory A Glimpse of Divine Wisdom
Look at nature.
A caterpillar crawls on leaves, seeing the world only through its tiny perspective.
Then one day it forms a cocoon.
Inside the cocoon, its old body starts breaking apart.
Science tells us that a caterpillar must lose its previous form to become something entirely new.
If it were aware, it might say:
“Everything is falling apart.”
But the truth is…
Everything is falling into place.
And maybe our lives work the same way.
When Allah takes something away…
When plans collapse…
When relationships end…
When jobs disappear…
When prayers feel unanswered…
We think it’s the end. But perhaps Allah is whispering:
“I am not punishing you.
I am transforming you.”
Sacrifice Isn’t About Losing
We mistakenly think sacrifice means loss.
But Qur’an and Sunnah teach the opposite.
Ibrahim (A.S.) surrendered and was raised till the end of time.
Hajra (A.S.) trusted and her Sa’i became part of one of the greatest acts of worship.
Ismail (A.S.) submitted and Allah honored him eternally.
No one lost anything. They chose Allah.
And Allah gave them more than they could ever imagine.
So What Happens After Eid?
Maybe Eid wasn’t meant to end with distribution of meat.
Maybe Eid came to ask:
What is standing between you and Allah?
What habit is holding you back?
What fear keeps stopping you?
What attachment do you hold tighter than you hold Allah?
What part of your ego needs to be sacrificed?
And the most important question:
Are you ready to let it go for Allah?
Eid Isn’t Over
If you think Eid is over…
Maybe you only looked at the calendar.
Not the message.
Eid-ul-Adha is not a three-day event.
It is a lifetime mindset.
Every day you restrain your desires for Allah…
Every day you choose faith over sin…
Every day you silence your ego…
Every day you pick Allah over your own wants…
You keep the message of Eid alive.
So the real question after Eid isn’t:
“How much meat is left in the freezer?”
It’s:
“Has the old version of me changed even a little?”
If yes…
Congratulations. Because even if we don’t know whether our sacrifice was accepted…
Your transformation has already begun.
And remember
A caterpillar never learns to fly. It simply trusts the process Allah designed.
One day, it realizes…
The thing that felt like a prison was actually building its wings. Maybe your life is inside that cocoon right now.
So be patient.
When Allah takes something away, it’s not to leave you empty…
It’s to prepare you for what your eyes cannot see yet. Allah always knows what your soul needs to become.
And if you understand that…
Then maybe your new life has just begun.
